Memories of last season’s injury problems have reared their ugly heads again with a view to Werder Bremen’s current personnel issues. Just weeks ago, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf was spoiled for choice and had his whole squad available to him, but he will make the trip to Hannover for Saturday’s Bundesliga tie with just 17 healthy players. Pizarro, Wiese, Jensen, Niemeyer and Mertesacker were already out of the reckoning but a training ground injury to Diego means that Schaaf will be left without six important players for the north German derby.
“I just heard a few minutes ago that we are going to have to make do without Diego too. He is suffering from muscular problems and the risk that it could develop into something more serious is just too great. He will not be able to play tomorrow,” stated Thomas Schaaf at the pre-match press conference.
“It’s exactly for situations like this that we have such a big squad of quality players,” remarked Schaaf in typically composed fashion. Amidst all the negative news on Friday afternoon, there was some light at the end of the tunnel. Aaron Hunt will make the Green-Whites squad. The 22 year old was left out of the squad for the Champions League game in Athens due to a contusion.
The following 17 men will be available to the Werder coach in Hannover: Vander – Mielitz, Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Tosic, Baumann, Vranjes, Fritz, Rosenberg, Özil, Hunt, Prödl, Husejinovic, Sanogo, Frings, Almeida.
