Following the Green-Whites Champions League game in Athens, the Werder Bremen board called for discussions to clear the situation surrounding the international future of midfielder Torsten Frings. Allofs said: “We are well aware that we are not on a desert island and that these things do have an effect on us. This topic arose before the game against Borussia Dortmund and it is still chasing us down now. That is not a very helpful situation to be in. I hope that there will be some discussions in the coming days to clear the air and so that things can quickly get back to normal.”
Allofs considers there to be every chance of that happening: “We have a good relationship with the DFB. Thomas Schaaf is in contact with Jogi Löw and I regularly telephone with Oliver Bierhoff. I think the best thing now would be a personal meeting with all parties involved, including Torsten Frings, now that Michael Ballack has also commented on the issue.”
In answering a question in Athens on Wednesday night, Torsten Frings once again commented on the fact that he was considering retiring from international football, having been left on the bench for the most recent German internationals, and that he now needs to think seriously about his future international career: “I’m going to need time to think about that and discuss things with my friends, my trainer and my family but this subject is not so important to me that I have to think about it all day, every day.”
