Per Mertesacker will not be eligible to play against his former club Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon. In an appeal hearing at the German Football Federation (DFB) sport court, the suspension handed down on 02.10.2008 was confirmed by DFB chairman Goetz Eilers. At the hearing in the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt, the German international was accompanied by Werder manager Manfred Müller - both flew directly from Athens to Frankfurt - and his legal representative Dr. Plenge.
“Unfortunately we were unable to convince those present with our arguments. I’m extremely disappointed, especially as the decision puts me out of the game against my former club Hannover 96. Not being able to play there is really a slight personal catastrophe for me,” admitted Mertesacker after hearing.
On the 27th of September at the Weser Stadium in Bremen, Per Mertesacker was red carded by referee Günter Perl from Munich for a professional foul on TSG Hoffenheim’s Vedad Ibisevic in the 63rd minute of the game.
A further Werder Bremen suspension was confirmed by UEFA on Thursday. Torsten Frings will not be available for the return game against Panathinaikos on 04.11.2008 after he picked up his third yellow card in the Champions League on Wednesday in Athens. There was some confusion after the game as to whether or not Torsten Frings had been booked at all as his name did not appear in the official match statistics. UEFA were able to ascertain from referee Michael Riley that the German international was booked in the 69th minute for vehemently protesting after the home side went 2-1 in front.
