Tenth position in the league table speaks quite simply for itself – Werder currently find themselves stranded in no-man’s-land! “Our position in the table perfectly mirrors our performances. We lost heavily in Stuttgart and weren’t able to take the three points against Dortmund. We’ve dropped far too many points and are now left in the middle of nowhere. We are not many points off the top teams, but it’s still too many in my opinion,” said Klaus Allofs.
Head-coach Thomas Schaaf sees the situation similarly: “When you look at the league table, we are no more than mediocre and that’s clear to see when you consider the fact that we are not imposing our style on the matches.” Another aspect that won’t please those responsible at Werder Bremen is the fact that, having conceded three against Dortmund, the Green-Whites hold the leagues poorest defensive record – something which particularly frustrates goalkeeper Tim Wiese: “I am really not happy about being the goalkeeper who has conceded most goals in the Bundesliga. Goals on the break, like the ones we conceded, just shouldn’t happen and we need to be better than that.”
The Green-Whites are now looking to battle their way back among the top teams in the league step-by-step. The potential to do so is there – that they are convinced of: “We are a top team, but only when we call upon all of our reserves. If we can only produce 70%, then we are not a top side,” remarked Mesut Özil after the game. Klaus Allofs added: “In general I don’t doubt the quality of the team, but should things not improve over the next couple of months, then that is something we will have to take into consideration.”
