Werder’s international players have only just returned from World Cup qualifying duty with their respective nations, but there is little time to catch a breather! It’s back to the daily slog of the Bundesliga on Saturday, 18.10.2008, and the guests at the Weser Stadium, Borussia Dortmund, will be no less of a task than mastering the international challenges in mid-week was: “We will have to quickly put the international matches behind us and begin to concentrate on the Werder things again,” emphasised Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf. “The Werder Things,” – on this occasion that means taking all three points against BVB and regaining contact with the leading sides in the table.
This weekend’s clash with Borussia Dortmund is just the first of three meetings with the ‘Black and Yellows’ this season. As during the 2007/2008 season, in addition to the Bundesliga, the Green-Whites will also face BVB in the DFB Cup. Not necessarily a good omen for Werder, who lost two of those three meeting last time around (0-3 in Dortmund, 2-0 in Bremen and 1-2 in the cup). On the other hand, Thomas Schaaf’s men could well consider this a chance to make this ‘Best of Three’ a more positive one: “We were unlucky to be eliminated from the cup by Dortmund. This time we want to get a better result,” remarked European Championship runner-up Clemens Fritz.
The focus for Werder is initially the Bundesliga and going some way towards putting the hefty 1-4 defeat to VfB Stuttgart, from the last match day, behind them: “We intend to close the chapter on the defeat in Stuttgart with a win against Dortmund. We’ve dropped enough points at this stage and we want to regain contact with the top teams,” remarked Fritz – who clearly has “The Werder Things” on his mind.
