The fourth match day in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was not one that Werder’s internationals will remember very fondly. With the exception of the four German internationals, Mertesacker, Fritz, Frings and Wiese, no other Green-White finished on a winning team in mid-week.
The most depressing day of all was experienced by Petri Pasanen. The full-back had a nightmare of a day with the Finnish national team as they were crushed 3-0 by Russia in Moscow – and the Werder man’s own goal to open the scoring won’t have made the situation any better. Sebastian Prödl was also on the receiving end of a clear defeat with Austria, who lost 3-1 to Serbia. Martin Harnik was left out of the Austrian squad as he recovers from ligament damage to his left ankle.
Portuguese striker Hugo Almeida won’t have been too delighted about his side’s rather unsatisfying 0-0 draw with rank outsiders Albania, who played the complete second half with just ten men. For Portugal it was the second game to end in stalemate in succession, after their 0-0 draw with Sweden at the weekend. In Braga, Hugo Almeida joined Manchester United star Christiano Ronaldo in attack and the Werder man came agonisingly close in the 67th minute with a headed effort which bounced away off the inside of the post.
