There was a distinctly Green-White touch to the German U21 national team as they secured qualification for the 2009 European Championships in Sweden. The team from ex-Werder player, and honorary club captain, Dieter Eilts began with the Werder trio of Aaron Hunt, Mesut Özil and Sebastian Boenish, as well as Kevin Schindler, who is currently on loan at Hansa Rostock, and eventually beat France 1-0. The first leg of the tie finished in a 1-1 draw in Germany, and with the return leg in Metz looking destined to finish in a scoreless draw and see the French progress on away goals, Benedikt Höwedes managed to scramble the ball over the line in the 90th minute to rescue Germany at the death.
“I really do have to compliment my team for the manner in which they battled and refused to give up right to the last,” said Eilts after the game, and he continued: “I always believed that we could do it.” DFB sport director Matthias Sammer stated satisfied: “We have progressed and that’s the important thing. The team experienced absolutely everything in this game and had that bit of luck, that you sometimes need, on their side.”
The draw for the groups at the tournament will take place in Goteborg’s ‘Svenska Mässan Exhibition Centre’ on December 3rd.
