Per Mertesacker was once again in the German national teams starting eleven on Wednesday evening for their World Cup qualifier against Wales in Monchengladbach. The home side ran out eventual 1-0 (0-0) winners thanks to a strike from distance by HSV’s Piotr Trochowski in the 72nd minute. It was Germany’s 50th win in a total of 68 World Cup qualifying games. Werder’s Clemens Fritz came on to replace Berlin’s Arne Friedrich in the 64th minute. On the night, both Tim Wiese and Torsten Frings were left to sit the match out on the substitute’s bench.
The win sees Germany maintain their position at the top of Group 4, with 10 points from four games, ahead of Russia and Wales – who are each on six points. Finland are back in fourth place (four points) whilst Azerbaijan and Lichtenstein foot the table on a single point a piece.
