It was quite a surprise for many as the first eleven for Germany’s World Cup qualifying clash with Russia was announced on Saturday and one particular name was missing: Torsten Frings. The Werder Bremen midfielder was left on the bench from the outset. Green-Whites coach Thomas Schaaf commented on Monday evening: “The national team coach has every right to select his team as he feels is correct and that also means deciding against Torsten Frings. We’re not about to try to influence that decision but we are certainly not satisfied when a Werder Bremen player, in particular one such as Torsten Frings, doesn’t play.” The coach continued: “He has no reason to be dissatisfied with his performances. In the past, Torsten has made it quite clear just how important he is to us but also to the German national team.”
