Even after the injury to Germany’s first choice goalkeeper Robert Enke, Werder’s Tim Wiese will apparently not start between the posts against Russia in the World Cup qualifier. The announcement was made by national team goalkeeping coach Andreas Köpke at the final pre-match press conference on Friday. Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s Rene Adler has been given the nod ahead of the Werder man, who will take his place on the bench at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund.

“I had hoped that I would be given the chance to play, because I trained very well, but that’s just how it goes in football,” admitted Wiese in a brief telephone conversation with WERDER.DE. Goalkeeping coach Andreas Köpke commented briefly on his conversation with Wiese: “They are of course the most difficult moments in my position. Tim had every right to be hopeful that he would play. The decision certainly wasn’t a foregone conclusion.”

The Green-Whites keeper can still hope to eventually claim the number one place between the posts with the German national team, as Köpke explained: “I intend to continue with my work, continue visiting the stadiums, make my analysis and view recording of the games so as to get a complete picture.”
