The German Football Federation’s (DFB) federal court will not hear the appeal in the case of the suspension bestowed upon Per Mertesacker until Thursday, 23.10.2008. The reason for the late court date, which could originally have been held on Monday, 20.10.2008, is the Champions League group tie in Athens against Panthinaikos, which makes it impossible to hold the hearing earlier.
Whether or not lofty central defender ‘Merte’ will be eligible to play for Werder against his former club, Hannover 96, will not be clear until just days before the game.
The German international was shown red by referee Günter Perl (Munich) in the 62nd minute of the Bundesliga game against 1899 Hoffenheim, for a professional foul on Vedad Ibisevic. In a verbal hearing on 02.10.2008, the DFB confirmed the verdict from the original hearing that the player would be suspended for three league games. Per Mertesacker has appealed that verdict.
