There was a moment of shock at Thursday morning’s training session. During a phase of shooting practice, Jurica Vranjes pulled up short, holding his thigh and had to finish the session early: “He has a muscular problem,” explained Thomas Schaaf later. “I hope it’s nothing too serious and that he’s not out for long. Maybe it’s just a strain or he made a wrong movement.”
The Croatian midfielder was able to clear the situation shortly afterwards: “The doctor said that there’s nothing badly damaged, just a hardening in the muscle. I’ll be back in training in a day or two.”
As on Wednesday, Werder playmaker Diego went through an individual programme with fitness trainer Yann-Benjamin Kugel again today. It was a perfect opportunity to work on his general fitness levels after he missed out on pre-season training due to his involvement at the Olympic Games: “We came up with the idea of using the time available to us now, while so many players are away on international duty, to see how we can help each individual player and improve him. It’s not possible to make up for the absence at pre-season training but we can help Diego to improve his physical condition,” commented Schaaf.
