Over the next few days, Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf will have a distinctly reduced group at his disposal in training. The reason for the absentees is match day two and three in qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. A total of 14 Green-Whites headed off to link up with their respective national teams at the beginning of the week as they prepare to do battle for one of the 31 places at the tournament finals.

For Germany’s first home games in the campaign, at home to Euro 2008 semi-finalists Russia in Dortmund on Saturday and in Mönchengladbach against Wales on Wednesday, Werder defenders Per Mertesacker and Clemens Fritz as well as midfielder Torsten Frings and goalkeeper Tim Wiese have all been nominated by national team coach Joachim Löw.

For Germany’s group opponents Finland, Werder full-back Petri Pasanen is once again in the squad. There will also be two Werder players going head-to-head in Group 1. When Sweden and Portugal clash on Saturday, strikers Markus Rosenberg and Hugo Almeida will be standing on opposite sides at the arena in Solna, Sweden. In the same group, Daniel Jensen will be in the Denmark side that will face Malta. The Austrian duo of Martin Harnik and Sebastian Prödl are preparing to take on the Faroe Islands on Saturday and then play host to Serbia at the Ernst-Happel-Stadium in Vienna four days later.

In Africa’s qualifying round, Boubacar Sanogo and the Ivory Coast will clash with Madagascar in Abidjan on Saturday. In addition, Mesut Özil, Aaron Hunt and Sebastian Boenish are all delighted to have received call-ups to the German U21’s for their crucial European Championship play-off games against France in Magdeburg on Friday and for the return leg in Metz on Wednesday.
