With a very poor performance on Saturday, the Green-Whites impressive run in the Bundesliga came to a sudden and abrupt end: “Today we never displayed any of the things that had made us so strong in recent weeks and we deserved to lose. The result put an end to a very good run and now we need to start another one,” remarked vice-captain Torsten Frings, who saw one door bang shut, but another swing open. After a run of six games without defeat, Werder once again had to make the journey back home empty handed. Not a nice feeling for the Green-Whites: “We were headed in the right direction and we wanted to take the opportunity to break away from the rest of the pack, but that didn’t work out. We were seriously poor today and deserved to lose as heavily as we did.”
Goalkeeper Tim Wiese had a similar opinion on the outcome of the match: “Luckily the other teams drop points too. Today was one of those days when nothing goes right. We need to sleep on that now, then put it behind us and move on. In two weeks time we get going again and will need to take all three points against Dortmund.”
There was one particular run that didn’t come to an end in Stuttgart though. Games between Werder and VfB are some of the highest scoring games in the Bundesliga. In the last five meetings between the two, there have been at least five goals scored each time – 29 goals in total. Unfortunately not always at the right end!
