The German Football Federation’s (DFB) sport commission held the verbal hearing on the decision made by the sole judge to suspend Per Mertesacker for three Bundesliga games, after his red card last weekend, and confirmed the original verdict would be upheld. The committee, headed by Hans E. Lorenz, decided to uphold the decision made by vice-supervisory commission chairman Norbert Weise.

After the hearing, Werder’s general manager Klaus Allofs commented: “We have acknowledged the confirmation of the penalty that has been passed down and we will now seek consultation in Bremen on Friday as to whether we will take this case to appeal.”

Hans E. Lorenz stated: “Following the standard practice of the DFB sport commission on classic professional fouls, that is the prevention of a clear goal chance by a non-violent foul resulting in a goal not being scored, a two match suspension is prescribed. In addition, the standard practice of the DFB sport commission is to extend that ban by one further game should the player in question have committed a professional foul in the previous season. For the sake of competitive fairness, we must follow a strict unified line in such cases.”

Per Mertesacker was sent off in the 63rd minute of Werder’s Bundesliga clash with 1899 Hoffenheim last Saturday, by referee Günter Perl from Munich, after he committed a professional foul on Vedad Ibisevic.

Werder Bremen have one week to make an appeal to the DFB federal court against the decision of the DFB sport court.
