He was the Green-Whites outstanding individual in recent games. Firstly with his stunning strike against Bayern, which he followed up with a brace against 1899 Hoffenheim. Now he has received the just reward for his efforts. The fans have named Mesut Özil ‘Football of the Month’ for September. There would appear to be no end to the rise of the modest 19 year old at the moment.
In the pole, organised by German sport magazine ‘Kicker’, television sport channel DSF and the German Football League (DFL), Özil captured an astounding 73,5% of the votes cast. The Werder man took the throne ahead of Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s German international Patrick Helmes (19,6%) and 1899 Hoffenheim’s Vedad Ibisevic (6,9%), who took second and third place respectively.
Özil received the news of his achievement on his return from Milan: “I am particularly delighted about this award because it was the fans that did the voting. The fact that I won the award is also an honour for the whole team, without whom it would not have been possible.” The last Werder Bremen player to win the award was Torsten Frings in May 2008. On that occasion the German international piped Marcelo Bordon and Franck Ribery to the post.
The results of the voting for September’s ‘Footballer of the Month’:
1. Mesut Özil (Werder Bremen), 73,5%
2. Patrick Helmes (Bayer 04 Leverkusen), 19,6%
3. Vedad Ibisevic (1899 Hoffenheim), 6,9%
