A day before Werder Bremen’s Champions League clash away to Italian title holders Inter Milan, the German Football Federation (DFB) concluded in an individual arraignment on concerning Per Mertesacker, that the German international would be suspended for a total of three German championship matches on grounds of unsportsmanlike conduct.

An objection to the findings of the sole judge can be registered with the DFB within a 24 hour period: “We consider the degree of penalty in this case to be too severe and so, we will not be accepting the verdict and we will be requesting a verbal hearing on the matter,” explained Werder general manager Klaus Allofs. The lofty central defender was shown red in the 62nd minute of Werder’s epic 5-4 win over 1899 Hoffenheim for a professional foul on Vedad Ibisevic.
