The Champions League countdown has begun! At the final pre-match training session on Bremen soil, on Monday afternoon, there was a strong group of players all battling for a place in the final squad for the ‘Mission in Milan’. With both Daniel Jensen (Achilles problem) and Frank Baumann (flu) back in training, the competition for places was even tougher. Head coach Thomas Schaaf, who constantly issued very clear instructions, had a very close eye on his players throughout the intensive 90 minute session: “We conceded four goals last weekend, you have to be very clear about what has to be done if you are to change that,” explained Schaaf.

The Green-Whites are quite convinced that things will work out better against the Italian champions. European Championship runner-up Torsten Frings said: “With the four goals conceded against Hoffenheim, there was certainly a lack of concentration on our behalf caused by the 4-1 lead. That won’t happen against Inter. We want to present ourselves well there. We have the potential and the self-confidence to do that. We’ve won our last three games in succession and that’s a little run we’d like to continue.”

The Green-Whites are not so convinced that their recent performances will have left any impression on Inter Milan ahead of the game though: “I really don’t care what kind of information the scouts and observers have returned to Milan with. My experience tells me that the Milanese won’t take much notice of that. On Wednesday they will play their own game,” stated general manager Klaus Allofs, who expects that the visitors will be treated with some respect by trainer José Mourinho’s team: “They know exactly who Werder Bremen are! We have seen to that ourselves over recent years. We have gotten ourselves a good name in Europe and that is something that we will have to live up to.”

The following group of 18 players took off towards Milan on Tuesday morning: Wiese, Vander, Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Baumann, Vranjes, Fritz, Rosenberg, Diego, Özil, Hunt, Prödl, Sanogo, Jensen, Frings, Pizarro, Mertesacker.
