FIFA referee Lubos Michel will take charge of the Champions League clash between Werder Bremen and Inter Milan on Wednesday, 01.10.2008 at the Giuseppe-Meazza-Stadium (kick-off 8:45pm). The Slovakian referee has been active in the Champions League since the 2000/2001 season and has twice taken charge of Werder games in that time. The last time Michel was the man in black for a game involving the Green-Whites was on 22.11.2006, when Thomas Schaaf’s men beat FC Chelsea 1-0 at the Weser Stadium.
Werder haven’t got such fond memories of their first encounter with Lubos Michel though. Almost exactly four years ago, the 36 year old refereed a match between Werder and Inter Milan. On 14.09.2004, the Green-Whites didn’t just lose the game 0-2, they also lost central defender Valérien Ismael early on. With just five minutes played, Michel showed the Frenchman a very dubious red card – a decision which had a decisive effect on the rest of the game.
The Slovakian quartet will also include referee’s assistants Martin Balko and Roman Csabay, along with fourth official Richard Havrilla.
