At the end of the game almost all of the Werder players rushed to embrace, and thank, Tim Wiese. They had all acknowledged the fact that it was their goalkeeper’s rock-solid performance, in an at times nerve-biting second half, that ensured they would progress in the competition. The final phase of the game didn’t particularly please Klaus Allofs: “We could have spared ourselves that finish. I would have liked to see us perform the task more convincingly, but that’s the cup for you! Aue took the risks, they played beyond their normal limitations. I think it’s fair to say that there are a lot of teams that wouldn’t have passed the test here tonight,” acknowledged the general manager, who also had some words of praise for Tim Wiese’s performance: “He made some good saves, but that why we signed him! It’s because he can make those kind of stops that he is part of the German national team set-up.”
Tim Wiese himself may not have been 100% satisfied with how things went, but he was delighted about reaching the next round of the cup: “In the end, Aue had three times as many chances as we did and that is something that shouldn’t happen. Cup games do have their own set of rules, especially here in the east with so many positively euphoric fans, who really get behind their team. That’s something quite special. We should all be happy about making it through to the next round though, if the luck runs against you it’s easy to lose such games.”
In spite of Aue’s late spurt, no one who saw the game could really doubt that the Green-Whites deserved to win. On the whole, Werder were the better team, they kept their heads having gone behind and had fate in their own attacking qualities: “One good shot on goal and suddenly you find yourself trailing. We never showed any signs of panic though and continued to concentrate on our game,” commented Allofs on the complete team performance.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf was also quite satisfied with his team: “We’re in the next round. It is quite clear that we aren’t always going to shine the way we did on Saturday. I’m quite satisfied with the game in general. We came through a typical cup game against Aue, who absolutely gave their all. We created a number of chances that we failed to complete. We should have decided the game a lot earlier.”
