Following the historical 5-2 win over FC Bayern Munich at the weekend, in Bremen normal service has resumed: “Internally we never really lost our heads about the win. The next couple of games will be proof of just how well we have dealt with the game in Munich. Over the next few matches we will be expecting the team to do just what we always expect of them, perform well and determinedly. ,” explained Werder’s head coach Thomas Schaaf at the official press conference ahead of the DFB Cup tie against FC Erzgebirge Aue.
“The whole competition lives from the element of surprise. In particular for the ‘smaller’ teams, the knock-out system really makes anything possible. It’s an opportunity for them to group their strengths,” commented Schaaf on the ‘All-or-Nothing’ character of the second round of the DFB Cup. Erzgebirge Aue will be doing all in their power to achieve a result which will help clear their heads after their poor start to the season.
The side from Saxony are currently second from bottom in the new third Bundesliga, having managed just four points from their first seven games. Far too little for the ambitious side who were only relegated from the second division at the end of last season!
