As Torsten Frings left the training pitch shortly after the beginning of the final pre-match session on Friday with his head bowed, it was clear that there was something amiss. Head-coach Thomas Schaaf then confirmed the bad news at the end of training: “Torsten will not be making the trip to Munich. He gave it a go today to see if things had improved but his condition would appear to have worsened,” said Schaaf. The 31 year old has been suffering from muscular problems since yesterday and it is now clear that he will not be fit to face Bayern Munich.
The news for defender Clemens Fritz is no better, after he was absent from training on Friday: “Clemens is not feeling well. Due to a cold which struck overnight and high fever, Clemens will not be travelling to Munich.” Aside from the two German internationals, Daniel Jensen (ankle and Achilles problems) and Hugo Almeida (back injury) are also out of the reckoning for the game in Munich. The duo were also missing from training on Thursday: “That alters the situation. Of course it’s particularly problematic when you lose players at such short notice, but we are thinking positive and will approach the game confidently. There’s no point in making everything sound negative now,” said Schaaf and he continued: “I’m still optimistic about the fact that we can achieve something against Bayern.”
The squad for the away tie at FC Bayern Munich is:
Tim Wiese, Christian Vander; Sebastian Boenisch, Petri Pasanen, Naldo, Dusko Tosic, Frank Baumann, Jurica Vranjes, Markus Rosenberg, Diego, Mesut Özil, Aaron Hunt, Sebastian Prödl, Boubacar Sanogo, Claudio Pizarro, Peter Niemeyer, Per Mertesacker, Martin Harnik
