The teams from Champions League Group B all registered successes at the weekend. With just two days to go before the group phase kicks off, all four teams managed to notch up wins in their dress rehearsal. Cypriot champions, and Werder’s first opponents Famagusta, had a similar experience to the Green-Whites as they controlled their clash with relegation candidate Doxa Katokopias, but were kept waiting until the 82nd minute before they finally made it 1-0 through Polish striker Luskasz Sosin. Following their 3-0 win on match day one in the league against Kyperounda, Anorthosis are again at the top of the table in Cypriot ‘Division A’.
Panathinaikos Athens lost out to local rivals AEK Athens on the first match day of the season but they bounced back to winning ways on Saturday, beating newly promoted Panthrakikos. Rodrigo Souza, Ioannis Goumas and Austria’s Andreas Ivanschitz were on target to make it a clear 3-0 win. The three points see PAO again regain touch with the mid-table sides.
Inter Milan also managed their first win of the season on match day two. Trainer Jose Mourinho’s side found themselves a goal down to Catania Calcio just before the break after a goal by Plasmati (42’). But Inter answered immediately and were back on level terms a minute later when new signing Quaresma drove in a cross from the right with the outside of his boot, which was deflected into the net. Just 60 second later, Inter were down to ten men with Muntari seeing red for violent conduct. The winning goal, to make it 2-1, was down to a curious call. A long throw in from Maicon landed on the head of Catania’s Christian Terlizzi and bounced onto the inside of the post. Keeper Bizzarri snatched the ball in mid air but the referee’s assistant deemed the ball to have crossed the line and the goal was given (48)!! Inter deserved the lead on the strength of their second half performance and could have won the tie more convincingly – despite being a man down.
