On the fourth match day of the season, Werder Bremen convincingly beat FC Energie Cottbus 3-0 (0-0). 40,000 spectators at the Weser Stadium saw the Green-Whites take the points with goals from Diego (75’), Torsten Frings (80’) and Boubacar Sanogo (83’).
Right from the kick-off, Werder went determinedly in search of an early goal but it proved a difficult task for trainer Thomas Schaaf’s men to create chances against a heavily packed Cottbus defence. The Green-Whites got their first sight of goal in the 15th minute as Ziebig managed to clear a shot from Claudio Pizarro at the last gasp.
Werder continued to press and after just over half an hour, Sebastian Boenisch had the lead on his foot, but his powerful effort from 20 meters out was turned away for a corner by FCE keeper Tremmel. As both Diego (41’), with a slightly deflected free-kick, and Torsten Frings (45’), who had a shot cleared in the last second, failed to put Werder in front, the sides went into the break locked at 0-0 - a fortunate score-line for the visitors.
It was much of the same after the break with Werder continuing to press in search of the lead. The Green-Whites were finally rewarded for their efforts in the 75th minute as Diego took on a pass from Mesut Özil and hammered unstoppably into the top right corner from the edge of the penalty area.
With the deadlock broken, the game changed dramatically. Cottbus were forced to open their play and the space that was left was superbly exploited by Werder. Following a poor attempted clearance by Cvitanovic, Torsten Frings took on the loose ball and drove home from 20 meters to make it 2-0. Soon after, substitute Boubacar Sanogo took on a clever pass from Per Mertesacker and slotted past Tremmel to seal a deserved 3-0 win for Werder.
