The German U21 national side have made the first massive step towards qualifying for the 2009 European Championships in Sweden. On Tuesday evening, the Werder Bremen duo of Mesut Özil and Sebastian Boenisch were left on the bench for the 90 minutes but even without their involvement, Dieter Eilts men managed a 0-0 draw with Israel to secure their place in the play-offs as group winners. On Friday, 12.09.2008, the draw for the pairings in the play-offs will be made in Malmö. The two-legged play-off games, to decide who will go to Sweden, will take place on October 10th and 14th.
