There was no containing the 48,000 ecstatic fans at the Ernst-Happel-Stadium in Vienna on Saturday evening. Roars of “Austria forever” echoed around the arena at a deafening level – and not without just cause. The Austrian side, which included Werder Bremen’s Sebastian Prödl and Martin Harnik, who was substituted in the 90th minute, deservedly stunned 2006 World Cup runner-up France with a fantastic 3-1 win to create the upset of the night in the World Cup qualifiers.

The goal-scorers on the night were Janko (8’), Aufhauser (41’) and Ivanschitz (72’ pen), with Sidney Govou snatching what was to be a mere consolation goal for the ‘Equipe Tricolore’ just after the hour mark. It was Austria’s first win against France in some 38 years.

Not nearly as spectacular, but nonetheless successful for the Werder man involved, was the match between Malta and Portugal in Ta’Qali. Striker Hugo Almeida made a burst into the penalty area from the left and placed the ball past Malta keeper Justin Haber after 61 minutes to make it 2-0 for Portugal. Shortly afterwards the 24 year old was replaced by Nuno Gomes. The goals were scored by Brian Said (o.g. 24’), Simao (70’), Almeida (61’) and Nani (78’) to complete a 4-0 win as Portugal got their World Cup qualifying campaign off to a positive start.

Brazil are also headed in the right direction to qualify for the 2010 World Cup after a 3-0 away win in Chile. Luis Fabiano (21’/83’) and Robinho (45’) got on the score sheet for the South Americans. Werder playmaker Diego was in the Brazilian starting eleven and was replaced by Elano in the 78th minute. The win sees the ‘Selecao’ move into second place in their group behind Paraguay.
