Mesut Özil and Sebastian Boenisch were both in action for the German U21 selection, coached by Werder Bremen honorary captain Dieter Eilts, on Friday evening as they breezed past Northern Ireland in their European Championship qualifier. Mesut Özil was in the German starting eleven and was replaced in the 76th minute by Werder’s Kevin Schindler, who is currently on loan at Hansa Rostock. Boenisch came on for goal-scorer Aogo in the 69th minute.
Dieter Eilts’ side confirmed their place at the top of Group 9 with their fifth win in seven games. Israel are in second place in the group, level on points but with a poorer goal difference, and will face Germany in a genuine decider on Tuesday evening in Duisburg. A draw would be enough for Germany on the night: “We are not going to go into the game looking for a draw. We want to win the game and that’s how we will approach it.”
The ten group winners, along with the four best runner-up teams, will go into a two-legged play-off round to decide who will be involved in the tournament in Sweden in 2009. Sweden, who automatically qualify, will host the event from June 15th through 29th 2009.
