On Thursday morning, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf headed off to Geneva to partake in the 10th ‘UEFA Elite Trainer Forum’. There the trainers from the most successful teams in the Champions League in recent years will meet, along with trainers from past UEFA Cup competitions and experts from the Champions League technical commission.
At 5pm the forum got underway with the greeting of the participants before the trainers were presented with the newest trends for UEFA’s prestige competition in 2008 and then there was time for some discussion. The highlights on day two will be the presentation of further trends in the international competition and another round of discussion on the roll of the trainers.
Thomas Schaaf, who was also invited to the event last year, said before leaving: “It is a welcome opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues from other clubs on development and experience.”
In the meantime, Werder assistant trainer Matthias Hönerbach and goalkeeping coach Michael Kraft put the players, who are not away on international duty, at the Weser Stadium. The session on Thursday morning was one with the ball as the focus of attention. Co-trainer Wolfgang Rolff went through an individual programme with the players who are currently carrying knocks.
