An unusual date and an unusual pairing! On Wednesday, 27.08.2008 at 7pm, Werder Bremen will take on 1.FC Lokomotive Leipzig in a friendly game at the ‘Leipziger Zentralstadion’: “We want to help give football in Leipzig something of a leg-up,” commented Werder general manager Klaus Allofs. WERDER.DE has taken the time to put together a brief lowdown on “Die Loksche”.
The club:
There is no question that 1.FC Lokomotive Leipzig have had a turbulent history. In-officially Lok are the successors of the first German football champions VfB Leipzig. Here a fast motion glimpse through their history: Founded as VfB in 1896, dissolved in 1946, newly formed in 1966 and renamed Lokomotive, 1991 new start in the German republic as VfB until their bankruptcy in July 2004. Eleven VfB fans newly found 1.FC Lok for a second time compiled as a men’s team casted from talented young local players who started in Germany’s lowest league (dritte Kreisklasse) in summer 2004. After four successive promotions, and a fusion that saw them leap three leagues Lok are now playing in the ‘Oberliga Nordost’ (5th division).
Their record against Werder:
The last competitive game between Werder and Lok was a 1-1 draw back in December 1993 (Bremen’s goal-scorer was Leipzig born Bernd Hobsch), the Green-Whites won the first leg 3-1. The fans in Leipzig prefer to remember the UEFA Cup games back during the 1983/1984 season when their side eliminated Werder in the second round (1-0 and 1-1).
