On the second match day of the Bundesliga season, Werder Bremen played out their second draw in succession. In an entertaining and often hard fought out match, the Green-Whites played out a 1-1 draw with FC Schalke 04. Werder took the lead after 63 minutes through Torsten Frings but failed to improve upon their advantage. With the game in the closing phase, Schalke turned up the heat and were rewarded with a late equaliser by Heiko Westermann (85’).
Werder were determined to take control from the outset and were clearly the better side early on in the match. With just eight minutes played, a strong Claudio Pizarro took on a pass from Markus Rosenberg and got a shot in on goal but the new signing was denied by Schalke keeper Schober. As the game wore on, the visitors began to see more of the ball and with 20 minutes on the clock, the home side were lucky not to go behind themselves when Sebastian Boenisch managed to clear the ball off the goal line and the teams went into the half time break locked in stalemate.
Werder made the stronger start again in the second period and this time made better use of their chance just past the hour mark. From a long clearance by Tim Wiese, Mesut Özil took on the ball and foiled a couple of defenders before dragging the ball back into the path of the on-rushing Torsten Frings who drove home powerfully from the edge of the box. Schalke went in desperate search of an equaliser and finally made their breakthrough with five minutes to go. Tim Wiese made a fantastic save from a Höwedes header but the ball fell invitingly for Heiko Westermann who slotted home to make the final score 1-1 (85’).
