For three days now, Claudio Pizarro has been back to the daily slog of full team training with Werder Bremen and his acclimatisation is coming along well. “At the moment the main thing is to see exactly how he moves and what sort of physical impression he makes,” explained trainer Thomas Schaaf. One particularly positive aspect for the Peruvian striker is that he completed almost the entire pre-season preparation period with FC Chelsea. “He has already laid the groundwork,” said Schaaf.
General manager Klaus Allofs continued: “The only deficit he has is that he hasn’t played yet.” In London, Pizarro was rested recently due to a muscular problem and couldn’t partake in the important friendly games played in Asia. “He certainly won’t be fully fit by the weekend,” noted the coach but he has been impressed by the 29 year olds performances in training. “He used the sessions well and it is possible that he will make an appearance. He knows what is expected here at the club and what is expected from him.” Claudio Pizarro noted that very quickly: “We need the play football the way Werder always have.”
One of Werder’s most creative players, Diego, is currently away at the Olympic Games in Beijing where he will be involved in the battle for Bronze when Brazil clash with Belgium on Friday, 22.08.2008 at 7pm local time (1pm CET). As far as the Brazilians are concerned “Only” bronze is possible now after their dreams of gold were crushed by a 3-0 defeat by South American rivals Argentina.
“When you are involved in sport, it’s always a possibility that you don’t leave the pitch as a winner, that’s how it is for Werder Bremen, just as it is for Brazil or Argentina,” remarked Klaus Allofs on the result of the semi-final and it’s possible effect on his man Diego: “I really think that not winning gold can be very motivating for the up-coming tasks and I hope that he has that thought in the back of his mind throughout the season with Werder.”
