The schedule has been set and the Werder fans can look forward to a top class home debut in the 2008/2009 Bundesliga season: “It’s a very important game,” explained Green-White midfielder Daniel Jensen. The first visitor to the Weser Stadium this season is none less than FC Schalke 04.
Three long months have passed since the last home game was played at the Weser Stadium: “We always want to pull off very special things here,” stated head coach Thomas Schaaf. “It will be a very interesting 90 minutes because a very strong side is coming here. But at exactly the same stage of last season – match day two in the 2007/2008 season - there was an equally prominent visitor to the Weser Stadium with FC Bayern Munich posing the threat - a game which doesn’t hold happy memories for Danish international Jensen: “I don’t recall that 0-4 defeat very fondly,” remarked the 29 year old. “We don’t want a repeat of that this time.”
In order to ensure that there is no repeat of that crushing loss, the Green-Whites will have to drastically improve on their performance in Bielefeld last week: “We never got into our rhythm and failed to really put our opponent under pressure or force them to make mistakes,” analysed Schaaf critically. “We want to, and must, improve on that. We know that we are capable of it.” Peter Niemeyer (knee problem) and Aaron Hunt (muscle sinew tear to the calf) will definitely not be available for selection.
