“A really horrible and stupid goal to concede”

Artur Wichniarek only had to stick a foot out. The Polish front man left Tim Wiese no chance as he made it 2:2 with Sebastian Boenisch watching on helplessly.

It was a game that only proved to create a collective shaking of heads - and that, once again, in Bielefeld - and again no three points. “There is absolutely no logical explanation as to why we so often play below our capabilities here,” Klaus Allofs had to admit, and made it very clear that he was not satisfied with the performance on the day. Head coach Thomas Schaaf sighed disappointedly after the game: “That was a game that’s easy to sum up. There was absolutely nothing new here. We just can’t seem to get our game going when we’re here.”

The two conceded goals were particularly frustrating: “We we’re simply caught napping twice. We reacted much too slowly and you just can’t play that way. The goals we conceded were all the more frustrating because we were twice in the lead,” said Schaaf. Klaus Allofs was in agreement with the coach, but went into further detail: “Our complete attitude for the first goal needs to be improved. Of course you should never let the ball bounce over your head like that but you just can’t allow the ball to be given away so easily or not keep tabs on the second striker.”

Allofs analysis of the second goal was no less detailed: “We made it too easy for our opponents by allowing them to slot the ball in behind the defence like that,” said the general manager who saw a lack of concentration as the true problem. “We adapted to Bielefeld’s game, played too little attention to our own game and we spent too much time discussing things with the Bielefeld players rather than getting on with things ourselves. When you play like that then you can’t expect to win matches that are so difficult.”

Torsten Frings was equally clear in his analysis of the game: “We have only ourselves to blame for dropping the points. We took the lead, played quite well and then conceded a really horrible and stupid goal. We then took on the challenge again, took the lead again and then conceded another totally stupid goal. Those kind of mistakes just can’t be allowed to happen, whether you’re in the flow of things are not. Whether it’s the first or the last game of the season.”
