Four days prior to the Bundesliga start, Werder’s final pre-season friendly against Danish first division side Esbjerg fB was a complete success. Not only because the Green-Whites totally controlled the game but also as trainer Thomas Schaaf was again able to get a further look at the form of his players and give those who hadn’t played so often a chance to gather some match practice, whilst also giving his strikers a confidence boost.
That was certainly the case for attacker Said Husejinovic, who until now hasn’t been involved all too often: “Said still needs to get familiar with things here. This is the first time that he has been through a pre-season preparation programme at this level and he still has a lot that he can learn both physically as well as tactically,” explained Schaaf. The two strike partners of Husejinovic – Boubacar Sanogo and Martin Harnik – were also under observation in Esbjerg: “Martin showed, particularly in the second half, what he is capable of. He put in a lot of running and had a number of notable scenes,” acknowledged Schaaf. The Austrian international, who has only been back in full team training since Monday after damaging ligaments in his left knee, was very satisfied with his performance.
The Green-Whites certainly won’t be putting an end to their search for a further attacker, despite the continued success of their strikers who have managed to score an impressive eleven goals in their last two games. But it does make the search a less desperate one. General manager Klaus Allofs, who once again took some time to join in the commentary on WERDER.TV, said: “We are confident in our strikers but considering the diversity of the tasks ahead we will be keeping an eye open for another forward player. If the opportunity to sign a further striker should arise, then it will have to be someone who has played at the highest level or has the potential to do so very quickly.”
