There were 23 Werder players involved in Monday afternoon’s training session. Head coach Thomas Schaaf had to make do without the midfield duo of Torsten Frings and Aaron Hunt though.
“They are both carrying slight knocks. Torsten is suffering with a muscular problem and Aaron has a painful toe injury,” explained Schaaf following the final training session of the day and the coach added: “We are hopeful that they will both recover over the next couple of days.” Considering the situation, it is more than likely that both Frings and Hunt will be rested for Tuesday’s friendly against Esbjerg fB (live at 7pm on WERDER.TV).
Max Kruse was also forced to pull out of the session shortly before the end after he received a kick to the left foot. The coach commented relieved: “It’s not so bad.” On a more positive note Martin Harnik was back in team training, having recovered from a knee problem, as was Mesut Özil, who was forced out of the DFB Cup clash in Nordhorn with fever. “I’m feeling good now, everything is ok,” stated Özil before going on to say: “It’s important for me now to get in some match practice.” Thomas Schaaf agreed with the youngster saying: “The basic idea that he should play in Esbjerg makes sense.”
