Good news on the double for Werder Bremen. The healing process for captain Frank Baumann and Sebastian Boenisch, who both returned from the game in Sofia carrying injuries, has gone according to plan. Full-back Boenisch suffered a ligament strain to his left ankle after a very heavy tackle in the game against Levski whilst Baumann later in the tie twisted an ankle.
Both were only able to complete individual training sessions on Thursday but head coach Thomas Schaaf did see some positive signs with a view to their possible involvement against Eintracht Nordhorn in the DFB Cup, on Saturday, 09.08.2008 at 3:30pm, and sees no reason why they can’t now both return to full team training: “I’m not completely free from pain but I’m willing to clinch my teeth and get on with it. I’m not the sort of person to rest up because of a little pain,” explained Boenisch.
A question marks still hangs over the participation of Aaron Hunt: “We still don’t exactly know what the problem is. He took a kick to the toe which is now quite swollen and is restricting his movement. We’ll have to see if that is better by tomorrow or Saturday.” Goalkeeper Tim Wiese, who slightly strained a hand in training on Thursday, is determined to play on Saturday. Definitely out of the clash with Nordhorn are Per Mertesacker (rehab following knee operation), Martin Harnik (knee ligament damage) as well as Diego and Dusko Tosic (Olympic Games).
