Werder Bremen U23 reserve Alparslan Erdem, who has a valid contract with the club until 2009, is on his way to Turkish first division side Galatasaray Istanbul. On Saturday, 02.08.2008, the two clubs, who will both be playing Champions League football this season, agreed on the final transfer modalities and that the fee involved in the deal would remain undisclosed.
“We can confirm the transfer now. It is a very interesting challenge for Alparslan Erdem and he has been given reason to believe that he can play an important role in the Galatasaray team. Nevertheless, his departure is really a shame because we had seen him as part of our extended first team squad and as one of our brightest prospects,” commented Werder general manager Klaus Allofs, but emphasised: “The fact is that the position on the left side of our defence is a hotly contested one and there are continually new, young players coming in. There was a very tempting offer from Galatasaray for all parties involved and it proved very lucrative for us.”
It was not an easy decision for 19 year old Erdem, who heads for Turkey now after five years in Bremen: “When all is said and done, I had a wonderful time here and always felt very much at home. I see better sporting perspectives with Galatasaray for me though,” explained Erdem, who shouldn’t have too many problems getting used to life in Turkey.
