Werder Bremen’s German international Per Mertesacker incurred a meniscus injury during training on Tuesday morning, without extraneous influence: “Initially that didn’t look good at all,” admitted team captain Frank Baumann, and his concerns were confirmed after a more precise examination in hospital. Mertesacker will undergo surgery in Augsburg on Wednesday, 23.07.2008.
It was Mertesacker’s first training session with the full team since his return from holiday. Only yesterday, ‘Merte’ and his European Championship runner-up colleagues, Torsten Frings and Clemens Fritz, went through their pre-season fitness test on ‘Platz 11’at the Weser Stadium.
During the afternoon session, one group of players went running in Bremen’s ‘Bürgerpark’ with fitness trainer Yann-Benjamin Kugel. The group included Sebastian Prödl, Hugo Almeida, Torsten Frings, Clemens Fritz and Boubacar Sanogo, who has just recovered from illness. The plan is for the Ivory Coast international to slowly rejoin the rest of his team mates at the training camp in Schruns. Sanogo is one of a group of 25 players who will travel to Austria on Wednesday.
The complete squad for the second training camp in Schruns:
Tim Wiese, Christian Vander, Sebastian Mielitz; Sebastian Boenisch, Petri Pasanen, Naldo, Frank Baumann, Jurica Vranjes, Clemens Fritz, Markus Rosenberg, Mesut Özil, Dusko Tosic, Aaron Hunt, Sebastian Prödl, Said Husejinovic, Boubacar Sanogo, Daniel Jensen, Torsten Frings, Hugo Almeida, Peter Niemeyer, Niklas Andersen, Martin Harnik, Max Kruse, Philipp Bargfrede, Marc Heider.
