Kickers, who will get their season started in the new third division this week, got off to a flying start in front of a crowd of 9,307 and took the lead after just 7 minutes as Enrico Neitzel caught Christian Vander off his guard with a lob from distance. Werder had difficulties throughout the first period but blossomed as the game went on and they managed to run off some of the stiffness from the intensive week on Norderney.
Martin Harnik turned the game on its head with a second half brace. In the 51st minute the Austrian international finished off a wonderful piece of combination play with Mesut Özil, Aaron Hunt and Jurica Vranjes. Ten minutes later he snatched a second with a powerful drive from 20 meters out.
