On the final day of the training camp he rewarded himself for his performances and helped Werder maintain their positive run in pre-season friendlies with a brace of goals. Martin Harnik was ‘Man of the Match’ in Sunday’s clash with third division Kickers Emden.
“For me personally it was very, very important today to score again. My last goals are quite a while ago now. I just hope that this continues,” said the EURO 2008 participant after the final whistle. The trainer was delighted for Harnik and very happy with the development the 22 year old has made: “His style of play is very complex. He does a lot of running and covers long distances. You could see that at the European Championships but he didn’t exactly win the ‘Golden Boot’ there. He needs to continue working on his effectiveness. In the first half he didn’t take his chances. The goals came for him in the second period though. He needs such successes and he needs the self-confidence to achieve his goals,” said Thomas Schaaf.
