July 6th, 2003: In Firrel, East Frisia, a then fourth division BSV Kickers Emden took on Werder Bremen in a pre-season friendly. Angelos Charisteas and Nelson Valdez got the goals for the Green-Whites as they ran out 2:0 winners. The result of the game in itself may not have been anything to write home about, but considering Werder went on to do the double in the 2003/2004 season, a friendly game like that one against Kickers could well be seen as a good omen.
“Emden demanded everything we had to offer,” commented a rather unsatisfied Thomas Schaaf after that game. A year later the pair clashed again on Norderney, with the Bundesliga side this time winning with a more convincing 4:0 score-line. On Sunday, July 20th 2008, at 4pm, Werder will clash with Kickers Emden once again, this time in Leer-Loga. For Emden it is their final pre-season friendly before they begin their campaign in the newly formed third division: “I expect my players to demand everything from Werder,” explained Kickers coach Stefan Emmerling, who wasn’t in charge back in 2003 and cannot comment on the game. One thing is clear though, Werder’s players can expect to be faced with quite a challenge.
