Werder Bremen’s Brazilian international Diego has not been released in order to play at the Olympic Games in Bejing and, on Monday morning, he joined the rest of his team mates as they headed to Norderney for their second training camp. After discussions this morning, Diego said: “Of course I would like to be involved at the Olympic Games. It’s a dream of mine but Werder don’t want to release me. Thomas Schaaf and Klaus Allofs explained the reasons to me and I respect them. I now want to concentrate on Werder and get into the pre-season preparations.

Following the meeting, Klaus Allofs explained: “We had the discussion we had been waiting on this morning. We explained our position to him and made it very clear that we will not releasing him due to the rather unsuitable timing of the event. He didn’t exactly jump for joy at the news but it’s not as if his whole world came crumbling down. It’s clear to us that he is under an amount of pressure from the Brazilian Football Federation and the fans there. He would have liked to have represented his country but we have to consider the interests of Werder Bremen and our fans. Diego is a key player for us and we don’t want to be left without him for weeks on end.”

Allofs also underlined that he was not expecting any difficulties from the football federation because of the decision: “The way things are right now, clubs cannot be legally forced to give up their players so I’m not expecting any reaction from FIFA.” On Monday morning, Werder Bremen appealed to FIFA to set some official regulations on such matters in order to avoid such situations: “It is a fully unnecessary procedure which no one wants and no one needs – and all that because the situation wasn’t cleared from the start.”

Aside from Diego, Dusko Tosic could have also gone to Peking to play for Serbia. The Serbian has not been released by the Green-Whites either.
