The Werder players went through over two hours of training on Wednesday morning and in the afternoon there was another intensive session on the schedule. Defender Petri Pasanen had to sit out both sessions due to a slight strain. Another carrying a knock at the moment is goalkeeper Christian Vander, who has been suffering with an adductor problem. According to trainer Thomas Schaaf, both will return to full team training over the next few days.
By Tuesday, Martin Harnik was already back out on the training facilities of the Weser Stadium to begin preparations for the new season. Harnik sees a season ahead in which he hopes to “put the fight up to the competition. I want to make my breakthrough here and I’m working on doing just that every day.” The first impressions made by the Hamburg born attacker showed that he has forgotten nothing during his holiday break.
There wasn’t a lot of time to draw breath for Harnik after a turbulent year, during which he signed his first professional contract, experienced his first full taste of Bundesliga football and crowned it all with his participation at EURO 2008. He spent his complete holiday time at home in Hamburg: “I only had three weeks so I wasn’t really all that motivated to go flying off anywhere, instead I chose my family. That really did me good.”
Invigorated by his holiday and EURO experience, he’s now planning to really take-off: “I made a good impression at the European Championships, tanked up on self-confidence and it was, on the whole, a positive experience for me,” said the 21 year old. “Of course there was some regretting the chance that we missed out on but I’ve dealt with that now and have learned from it.” The young striker closed with a promise: “The goals that I didn’t score there, I will score for Werder.”
