In just a few hours time, trainer Thomas Schaaf will call his troops together for the first time in preparation for the 2008/2009 season. The whole process will begin with a fitness test at 3:30pm on pitch 11 of the Weser Stadium training complex: “Finally back to playing football, I’m really itching to go. It can start now,” said an enthusiastic Tim Wiese.

And that’s saying something. The keeper had to pull out of the final game of the 2007/2008 season with a patella tendon injury and unwillingly put a premature end to his football year in May. “I had been having problems throughout the second half of the season,” explained the 26 year old, and he added: “That’s why the rest and the holiday have done me so good. I have fully recovered from the injury now and the break is finally over.”

Werder captain Frank Baumann sees things similarly: “It was a very long break for some of us. I’m quite sure that everyone is looking forward to getting started in the season.” But, before there are points to be won in the Bundesliga, knock-out games to play in the DFB Cup and some extremely exciting nights to be had in the Champions League, first on the schedule is to lay the groundwork for what is sure to be a long and energy-sapping season.

‘Baumi’ hit the nail on the head, stating: “Although the team know that the next few weeks will be very hard work, I hope we have a happier season start with preparations this time around and that we don’t suffer from the same injury problems that plagued us last year.” Tim Wiese is quite relaxed ahead of the up-coming endurance programme: “I’m quite relaxed about that, it’s all part of it. We have a couple of tough days coming but that’s something we will have to live with.”
