Markus Rosenberg and the Swedish national team are now in for a tough battle to qualify for the EURO 2008 quarter finals. The Scandinavians were beaten 1:2 (1:1) by Spain thanks to a goal in injury time. Werder striker Markus Rosenberg got his chance to show what he’s capable of throughout the second half but he could do little to prevent the defeat for a Swedish side who had already settled for a point.
The game began quite evenly matched with both sides testing the water until the quarter hour mark when Fernando Torres stole in to put the Spaniards in front from a corner. The Swedes took the set-back in their stride and controlled the game over long periods. Both Elmander and Larsson missed out on good chances to find an equaliser before superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic finally put the north Europeans back on level terms in the 34th minute.
For the second period, Markus Rosenberg was introduced to replace the injured Ibrahimovic. The game itself lost much of its pace and drive with the Swedes slipping back into defensive mode, which failed to play to Rosenberg’s strengths. Chances on goal were few and far between but in the 93rd minute, Spain’s David Villa made the breakthrough and slipped the ball past keeper Isaksson to secure his sides progression to the quarter finals.
