It was characteristic picture: Whilst his team mates basked in the glory of a long awaited opportunity to celebrate and the fans at the Ernst-Happel-Stadium erupted with joy, Matin Harnik sat motionless on the pitch. The national team coach had to comfort his young star despite the fact that his side had just picked up the first point in four games involving the tournament two hosts: “I really can’t enjoy the celebrations at the moment,” admitted the Werder striker who went on to say: “We should have won the game. Poland can consider themselves lucky.”

His team mates are probably totally in agreement with him in spite of their attempts to pass the late equaliser off as feeling like a winner. Harnik couldn’t do so, in particular because he himself had two glorious chances early in the game to put his side in the driving seat. After a half hour of play, the Austrian’s stunning start disintegrated into nothing as the Polish side took the lead. The 21 year old striker was hard on himself stating: “Incompetence”, was the reason he missed two such chances with the goal at his mercy: “At the European Championships you need to be ice cold in front of goal.”

Luckily, and Harnik will surely agree on that himself in a day or two, Austria appeared to have the football Gods on their side: “Situations like that occur quite often. Luckily the referee saw me being dragged down in the box,” commented soon to be Werder man Sebastian Prödl on the topic of the foul which led to the penalty in the 92nd minute. The central defender himself will not be able to assist his team in their ‘Final’ against Germany on Monday having picked up his second yellow card of the competition. Harnik will be there though and he promised: “If we take our chances, then Germany will need to be very wary.”
