It’s not only the Werder Bremen players in the German national team who are eagerly awaiting the next EURO 2008 match, but also their relatives and friends. When Frings, Fritz, Mertesacker and Borowski make their way into the stadium on Thursday, they will all have family members in the stands crossing their fingers and cheering them on.
“Everyone enjoys that sort of support. My complete contingency of tickets has gone to friends and family members,” explained Per Mertesacker, who is prepared not to have any direct contact to his personal fans on match day.
That considered, the defender values highly the support from his immediate surroundings: “Just the knowledge that they are there in the stadium is very important – that’s when you know that you are not alone in the world. Even though they are aware that I won’t see any of them, they are still prepared to make the trip to Austria just for one match. They’ll just hop on train, most of them from Hanover to Munich, and then on from there. The connection is quite good.”
