The German national team, which included Per Mertsacker, Torsten Frings and Clemens Fritz from Werder Bremen in the starting eleven, made a perfect start to the 2008 European Championships with a 2:0 (1:0) win over Poland. In Klagenfurt, Lukas Podolski was on target in the 20th and again in the 72nd minute to secure Germany’s first European Championship win since June 30th 1996. The win saw trainer Joachim Löw’s side leap-frog Croatia into top spot in Group B.

Clemens Fritz, who generally operates as a right full back for Werder, began in the hotly debated position on the right side of midfield. Torsten Frings and Per Mertesacker took up, as ever, their regular positions in the defensive midfield and centre of defence respectively. All three Werder men performed well on the night with ‘Merte’ in particular proving an absolute pillar at the centre of the back four whilst often proving capable of opening up the play when called upon.

Torsten Frings was as solid as ever in the defensive midfield position with strong tackling and an eye for a clever pass. Out on the right side of midfield, Clemens Fritz was a constant threat and in the 38th minute made a fantastic run to set up Mario Gomez for what should have been Germany’s second goal. Carrying a slight knock, the Werder man made way for Bastian Schweinsteiger during the second half.
