That’s the way to do it! On the 32nd match day of the season, Werder Bremen crushed Hannover 96 with a sunning 6:1 (2:0) thrashing. In front of a capacity crowd of 42,100 at the Weser Stadium, Hugo Almeida (14’), the Brazilian Naldo (22’), Tim Borowski (74’) as well as substitutes Ivan Klasnic (82’) and Aaron Hunt (87’) were on target for the Green-Whites. The visitor’s consolation goal was scored by Szabolcs Huszti (90’).

Right from the very first minute, trainer Thomas Schaaf’s side took control of the proceedings and it was little wonder that the Green-Whites were 2:0 up by half time. With just 14 minutes played, Hugo Almeida was perfectly placed to slot into an empty net after a strong run and simple square pass from Naldo. The lofty Brazilian central defender got in on the scoring himself in the 27th minute as he rose unmarked to nod home a free-kick swung in from the right and give the home side a comfortable lead going into the break.

In the second period, Werder continued with the impressive display from the first half and in the 73rd minute, midfielder Tim Borowski bid his farewell to the Weser fateful with an excellent strike to make it 3:0 - and the scoring was far from over.

In the 80th minute, Diego had a penalty parried by H96 keeper Robert Enke but substitute Ivan Klasnic reacted quickest to convert the loose ball and the scoring continued with Markus Rosenberg profiting from a brilliant pass by Klasnic to make it 5:0 (82’). Another Werder substitute, Aaron Hunt, then got in on the action to make it 6:0 after some good work by Mesut Özil. The visitors managed a consolation in the 90th minute through Huszti, but there was to be no spoiling the Green-Whites day.

Werder Bremen’s only competitor in the race for second place, FC Schalke 04, beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1:0, but the Green-Whites two point jump, coupled with their impressively superior goal difference, on Schalke means that even a draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on the final day of the season should easily be enough to guarantee the runner-up position in the league and the direct qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League competition.
