What a ‚North Derby‘! On the 32nd match day of the season, Werder Bremen won 1:0 (0:0) away to Hamburg SV and again move into second place in the table above FC Schalke 04. 57,000 spectators at the Hamburg arena saw Hugo Almeida (50') score what was to prove a ‘Golden-Goal’ for the Green-Whites in the 50th minute.
It was the hosts who were in control throughout the first 30 minutes of an extremely physical first half. Following a shot on goal from distance by Markus Rosenberg after just six minutes, the visitors were forced onto the back foot in defence of Tim Wiese’s goal.
The Werder keeper was called into action to make a save from Paolo Guerrero (18’) and then three minutes later again to make a last ditch stop, preventing David Jarolim from giving the home side the lead. In the 26th minute, Hugo Almeida had the best chance of the half for Werder with a headed effort that HSV keeper Frank Rost managed to turn over the crossbar.
Just after the re-start, the Werder fans got something of a shock as top Hamburg striker Ivica Olic broke free on the break but Tim Wiese stood his ground and denied the striker with an outstretched foot.
Then, finally relief for the Green-Whites in the form of a 1:0 lead. Rosenberg did excellently to win the ball from Bastian Reinhardt before laying back to Hugo Almeida (50') who drove the ball unstoppably into the top right corner from 16 meters out.
Just seven minutes later, Werder captain Frank Baumann picked up his second yellow of the night and was sent for an early bath. The visitors continued to fight and not even a red card for substitute Jurica Vranjes could knock Werder out of their stride. The vital derby win for Thomas Schaaf’s men means they once again leap-frog FC Schalke 04 into second place.
